Logging wrestling training without a heart rate monitor

Typical effort: 85–95 % of maximum heart rate (Barbas 2011; Nilsson 2002). Generate a complete .fit file for a session you could not record.

Why the band comes off

Wrestling is the classic case for a missing workout. Grip fighting, underhooks and mat contact make a wrist strap a liability — it gets torn off, it digs into your partner, and most clubs and rulesets do not allow hard objects on the wrist during live wrestling.

What heart rate to expect

Studies on elite Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers report 85–95 % of maximum heart rate during live bouts, with lactate values among the highest measured in any sport. The pattern is chaotic rather than rhythmic: repeated isometric grip exchanges drive heart rate up faster than oxygen uptake alone would explain, and recovery between scrambles is incomplete.

Typical session structure

A typical 90-minute session is roughly 10 min warm-up, 15 min technique, 10 min drilling and then 5 rounds of live wrestling. Because only the live rounds sit near maximum, the session average lands far below the bout figure — around 65–70 % of maximum heart rate.

How to log it
  1. Open the generator and select Wrestling.
  2. Enter your age, resting heart rate and fitness level.
  3. Choose a preset or build the session block by block.
  4. Generate — the .fit file is created immediately.
  5. Import it into Garmin Connect, Strava or Zepp.
